Refunds and account credits
Give money back, or give a credit that comes off their next bill.
Refunding a payment
- 1On Billing, find the paid invoice.
- 2Press Refund.
- 3Enter the full amount or part of it.
- 4Giving back only part? Pick what it means: Goodwill discount (the bill is lowered and the customer owes nothing more) or Money back, still owed (that amount is due again and reminders will ask for it). Your usual choice is picked for you — set it in Settings → Payments with Partial refunds are owed again. Refunds you give right inside Stripe follow that setting too.
- 5Press Record refund.
This records the refund in your books, and it appears on the customer's statement. If they paid by card, also refund the card in your Stripe account. It usually takes 5–10 days to show up on their card.
Tip: An invoice that has a payment recorded can't be deleted, so your books always match the money that moved. Record a refund instead. Unpaid invoices can still be deleted with the trash button.
An account credit is money the customer can use later. It's taken off their next bill automatically. Want it used now? On the customer's subscription page, press Apply under Account credit. It comes off their oldest unpaid bills first, and any bill it fully covers is marked paid. If they have no unpaid bills, the credit simply waits for the next one.
Good to know: If a customer disputes a charge with their bank, you'll get an urgent alert. Respond quickly from your Stripe account.
